Thumb MCP Joint Fusion

This professional golfer underwent repair of an ulnar collateral ligament injury.  Eventually, he developed degeneration of the thumb MCP joint requiring fusion.  The degeneration is best seen on the Lateral x-ray.

Preoperatively, x-rays were performed while he held his golf club so that the angle of joint fusion would correspond to the manner in which he was accustomed to holding the club.

A “tension-band” technique was chosen.  The joint fused rapidly, minimizing the pain from the degenerative joint.  This metal was eventually removed. 

Other forms of stabilization for fusion of an MCP or IP joint in the hand include: plate and screw constructs; cannulated compression screws, and wires.
